Introduction to AIHW annual report 2011-12
Hello, I'm David Kalisch, Director and CEO of the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare.
Welcome to the Institute's Annual Report for 2011-12.
It was a great year for us-we celebrated 25 years since we were established in 1987.
We launched our two flagship documents, Australia's Welfare 2011 and Australia's Health 2012, which are the go-to statistical reports on health and welfare in Australia.
We published 141 reports in total for the year, or around 3 reports a week.
We produced the first results from our new Specialist Homelessness Services data collection; we released several updates for the MyHospitals website, and for the first time, we were able to release elective surgery and emergency waiting times data within a few months of the end of the financial year.
Another really important achievement was that we became an accredited Commonwealth Data Integrating Authority.
This means we are one of the few organisations who can link sensitive Commonwealth data sets to produce new and interesting views on what's happening among and between health and welfare services.
The Institute is a special organisation-we have great strengths in our data collections, in our proven ability to work with others in generating authoritative statistics and information, and in our ability to put it all together in ways that make sense to the Australian community.
I trust that our 2011-12 annual report shows you all of that, and more- we continue to 'walk the talk' when it comes to health and welfare statistics in Australia.
Thank you for visiting our website, and happy reading!
