Australasian Association of Cancer Registries

The
Australasian Association of Cancer Registries (AACR) consists of the eight
Australian state and territory cancer registries, the New Zealand Cancer
registry and the National Cancer Statistics Clearing House at the Australian Institute
of Health and Welfare (AIHW). The Health
Registers and Cancer Monitoring Unit at the AIHW provides the Secretariat for the
AACR Executive. Cancer
registration is an important and fundamental tool in cancer monitoring.
Australian states and territories are required by legislation to maintain a cancer
registry of new cases of malignant cancer.
In order to co-ordinate
cancer statistics on a national basis, the National Cancer Statistics Clearing House
(NCSCH) was established in 1986 at the AIHW and is supervised by the AACR.
The AACR Executive Committee comprises an AIHW representative and five representatives of State or Territory cancer registries elected by the AACR at its annual general meeting. The Executive committee includes at least two Directors of cancer registries; one Director is the Committee Chair. The role of the AACR Executive Committee in relation to the NCSCH is to provide advice to the AIHW on the direction of the NCSCH work program, development of publication topics and strategies, and to provide on-going technical advice in the operation of the NCSCH. The AACR Executive Committee meets 3 or 4 times per year, usually by teleconference, where a progress report is presented by the AIHW. The AACR Executive Committee is also responsible for reporting the progress of the NCSCH to AACR members. This is done through e-mail consultation during the year, distribution of minutes of the Executive committee to all Registries, and annual reporting at the annual general meeting.
