AIHW Ethics Committee
The Committee's principal responsibility is to form an opinion as to the acceptability or otherwise, on ethical grounds, of proposed health-related and welfare-related activities of the Institute. As part of the project's approval, the Committee monitors the project annually until its completion. Submissions are called before each meeting. Outside researchers should have a contact officer within the Institute who can act as a liaison between the researcher and the Ethics Committee.
Researchers considering applying to the AIHW Ethics Committee to link a population cohort with the National Cancer Statistics Clearing House should in the first instance liaise with the Head of the AIHW Health Registers and Cancer Monitoring unit (phone 02 6244 1140). Approvals for such linkages are required from all State and Territory cancer registries.
Australian Screening Advisory Committee
The Australian Screening Advisory Committee (ASAC) is a new national body to provide advice to the Australian and State and Territory governments on national screening programs, including existing programs, those under consideration and emerging screening issues. ASAC replaces the previous National Advisory Committee to BreastScreen Australia, National Advisory Committee to the National Cervical Screening Program and the Bowel Cancer Screening Pilot Implementation Committee. Members of ASAC are drawn from Australian government agencies, State and Territory health departments, and epidemiology, population health, gastroenterology, gynaecological oncology, general practice, consumer and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander groups.
