Background
This website provides access to the AIHW Chronic Disease Indicators Database,
created by the Population Health Unit (the technical work was done by the Data and Information Technology Unit).
The work was funded under the 2005-06 Department of Health and Ageing (DoHA) MOU.
This catalogue of existing endorsed indicators is the first phase
of this chronic disease indicators project, which aims to contribute
to the implementation of the Blueprint for nationwide surveillance
of chronic diseases and determinants (NPHIWG 2005).
The second phase is the distillation of a comprehensive list
of 'indicators for chronic disease'
(i.e. those pertinent to chronic disease as a whole).
The chronic diseases and determinants featured on this
website (i.e. in the 'tree') are those highlighted by DoHA
as those that represent the greatest burden of chronic
disease in Australia and for which there is evidence that
prevention interventions are effective. However, it is
intended to eventually expand the database to include a
wider range of chronic disease indicators.
This is a 'living' website-as new indicators are endorsed,
they will be incorporated into the database. If you know of any indicators
that could be included, please contact the CDI helpdesk
