The child protection counting rules specify the standards for the data that are provided by the States and Territories for the national child protection data collection. The AIHW distributes these counting rules at the end of the financial year to all jurisdictions. The counting rules aim to ensure that the child protection data are as comparable as possible - however each State and Territory has its own legislation, policies and practices in relation to child protection, so that there are differences between jurisdictions in the data provided.
The data provided by the States and Territories are published in the AIHW annual report Child protection Australia 2009-10 and in the Report on Government Services.
