The AIHW works on a range of statistical reporting, data development and data collection focused on children, youth and families. This area is shared between two units.
The Child Youth and Families unit, who are responsible for:
- Child health, development and wellbeing - including the publishing of A Picture of Australia's Children and Making Progress, along with maintaining headline indicators of children's health and wellbeing.
- Youth health and wellbeing
The Child and Youth Welfare unit, who are responsible for:
- Child protection - including the annual collection and publication of data on child protection notifications, children on care and protection orders, and intensive family support services.
- Adoptions - including the annual collection and publication of data on adoptions of Australian children, and intercountry adoptions.
- Children's services - Child care and preschools.
- Juvenile Justice - including the annual collection and publication of data from the Juvenile Justice national minimum data set (JJ NMDS).
These units also contribute towards the Institute's biennial reports to Parliament (Australia's Health and Australia's Welfare) which include an authoritative and comprehensive summary of issues related to children, young people and families.
