The Children, Youth and Families Unit works on a range of statistical reporting, data collection and data development activities in relation to the health and wellbeing of children and young people, child welfare (including child protection, family support services and adoptions) and children's services (child care and preschools).

The unit also contributes towards the Institute's biennial reports to Parliament (Australia's Health and Australia's Welfare) which include an authoritative and comprehensive summary of issues related to children, young people and families.

In addition, the unit publishes annual reports on child protection and adoptions and substantial indicator based reports (published every four years) on the health and wellbeing of children and young people.
