This is the seventh in a series of surveys auspiced by the National Drug Strategy (and its predecessors) and the second to be conducted by the AIHW, but the first to be conducted fully as an AIHW function. It is a national household survey of non-institutionalised persons aged 14 years and over. There were 26,744 completed responses in 2001. Fieldwork was conducted by Roy Morgan Research.

The survey was conducted across three collection modes: (i) personal interview with a self-complete component for sensitive questions; (ii) self-complete 'drop-and-collect' method; and (iii) computer-assisted telephone interview.

Topics covered include knowledge, attitudes and perceptions of drug-related issues, personal use of drugs (tobacco, alcohol and illicit drugs), support for drug-related policies, personal involvement in drug-related activities and victimisation, as well as typical demographics.

A confidentialised unit record file for public access is available at the Social Science Data Archives at the ANU: http://ssda.anu.edu.au Public access to the master unit record data requires application to the AIHW Ethics Committee.
