| The Non-Admitted Patient Emergency Department Care Database (NAPEDCD) is a compilation of electronic records of non-admitted patient service episodes from emergency departments of selected public hospitals that were classified as either Peer Group A or B in Australian Hospital Statistics 2002-03 (see appendix 4 of the publication).
The NAPEDCD is compiled by the Institute from data supplied by the state and territory health authorities. For 2003-04, all states and territories were able to provide data for public hospitals in peer groups A and B. The exceptions were one hospital in peer group A in Queensland and one hospital in peer group B in New South Wales that was categorised as a medium hospital in 2002-03. All peer group A and B hospitals in South Australia, Western Australia and Victoria provided data; however, data were not available for all occasions of service. Nationally, for hospitals in peer groups A and B, the overall coverage was approximately 98% of the number of emergency department occasions of service reported to the National Public Hospital Establishments Database (NPHED). Some states and territories also provided data for public hospitals which were classified to other peer groups. The Northern Territory supplied data for all public hospitals, Victoria for seven medium hospitals, South Australia for one medium hospital and Western Australia for three medium hospitals and two Small acute hospitals (remote). Coverage overall was 73% of the number of emergency department occasions of service reported to NPHED for all public hospitals. | |
