Catalogue of Holdings of AIHW Data
The catalogue is an online searchable selection of available statistical data held by the Institute. It can be searched in various ways to obtain details about specific data holdings. It also provides links to statistical data products that are available online while maintaining data protection and security. more
Privacy of data
The AIHW has an exemplary record of protecting the security of the data it holds on the health and welfare of Australians. more
Interactive data
Alcohol and other drug treatment data cubes
These cubes contain data from the Alcohol and Other Drug Treatment Services National Minimum Data Set (AODTS-NMDS) collection. The NMDS is a nationally agreed set of common data items collected by government funded service providers for clients registered for alcohol and other drug treatment. This page contains links to a number of data cubes containing data from the 2001-02, 2002-03, 2003-04, 2004-05 and 2005-06 Alcohol and Other Drug Treatment Services National Minimum Data Set (AODTS-NMDS) collections.
Cancer data
Cancer incidence data are available in the ACIM books and cancer data cubes. Mortality data are available in the ACIM books and GRIM books (see below). Hospital separations data are available in the national hospital morbidity data cubes (see below).
Chronic disease indicators
A catalogue of national indicators for chronic disease, including behavioural, biological, psychosocial, early life and environmental risk factors.
Disability data cubes
These cubes provide access to data currently held by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare. The data are displayed in multidimensional data cubes that can be interrogated by using the drop down menus. Data cubes available are subsets of data from the Commonwealth State/Territory Disability Agreement National Minimum Data Set (CSTDA NMDS) collection for people with a disability during 2005-06, 2004-05, 2003-04 and on snapshot days in 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2002. For more information, or to access these data, please visit the interactive disability data page.
Expenditure data cubes
The Interactive Expenditure Data page contains links to data cubes containing data about health expenditure.
General practice data cubes [External link]
This page links to a series of tables of general practice activity from the Bettering the Evaluation and Care of Health (BEACH) program. BEACH is a continuous survey of encounters between general practitioners and patients across Australia. The tables show the distribution (%) of problems managed at GP-patient encounters classified to body systems according to the International Classification of Primary Care (ICPC-2). For more information about the design, methods and results of the BEACH study, please visit the BEACH page in the Family Medicine Research Centre website http://www.fmrc.org.au/beach.htm
General Record of Incidence of Mortality (GRIM)
The AIHW has compiled long-term mortality data on selected causes of death by age and sex for each year from the beginning of the 20th century, called the GRIM (General Record of Incidence of Mortality) books. They are interactive Excel workbooks updated annually containing comprehensive long-term mortality data on selected causes of death by age and sex for each year.
Mental health admitted patients data cubes
The interactive mental health admitted patients data cubes contain information on patients admitted to hospital who receive specialised psychiatric care, i.e. who are in a public psychiatric hospital or a psychiatric unit of an acute care hospital or who had a mental health-related principal diagnosis (for definitions, see AIHW publication Mental health services in Australia 2004-05). The variables included in the data cubes are year of collection, sex, age group, same day separation flag, mental health legal status, type of separation, hospital type and principal diagnosis. The data cubes present information on numbers of psychiatric care days, separations and patient days.

National hospital morbidity data cubes
The interactive national hospital morbidity data page contains links to a number of data cubes containing information on the principal diagnoses, procedures and diagnosis related groups (DRGs) of patients admitted to Australian hospitals. Data are also available on the principal diagnosis of patients in specialised psychiatric care. The source of these data is the National Hospital Morbidity Database. This database, compiled by the Institute from data supplied by the State and Territory health authorities, is a collection of records for admitted patients separated from public and private hospitals in Australia.
Risk factor data
Data on the prevalence of a number of risk factors is presented in a series of spreadsheets. Risk factors included are: high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, body weight, physical inactivity, smoking and alcohol consumption. Data includes age-specific rates, age-standardised rates, and some trends. Follow the link to risk factor data for access.
These cubes contain data from the Fixing Houses for Better Health (FHBH) program.
