Oral health and access to dental care - older adults in Australia: research report, November 2000
This report provides information on aspects of oral health and use of dental services among community-dwelling older adults in Australia. Historically, the majority of older adults were edentulous (no natural teeth), leading to low demand for dental services. Currently the population of older adults is increasing in number, with a greater proportion retaining their teeth, consequently increasing their requirement for dental services. A high proportion of older adults are government concession card holders, and may be at a disadvantage in accessing dental care due to the lack of public oral health facilities and increased length of waiting lists.
Oral health and access to dental care - the gap between the 'deprived' and the 'privileged' in Australia: research report, March 2001
This report provides information on oral health and use of dental services in population groups described as 'deprived' and 'privileged'. Differences in the use of dental services among disadvantaged groups such as government concession card holders, migrant populations, and indigenous Australians have been documented, however, little is known about the extremes of advantage and disadvantage. Problem-oriented dental visiting patterns and higher rates of tooth loss indicate that some Australians may be disadvantaged in terms of access to dental care.

Oral health and access to dental care in rural and remote areas of Australia: research report, September 1999
This report provides information on some aspects of oral health and use of dental services in rural and remote areas. Australians in rural and remote areas are at a disadvantage in accessing dental care due to the lack of availability of dentists and other oral health facilities, and the greater distances involved. Capital cities have almost double the rate of practising dentists per 100,000 population than the rest of Australia (51.2 cf. 28.7). A higher rate of problem-oriented dental visits and fewer people making a recent visit are the most striking differences in access to dental services in country areas. These differences leave residents of rural and remote areas in poorer health than their urban counterparts.
