Disability support services provided under the Commonwealth/State Disability Agreement, national data 1999

Presents data on services directly provided or funded by governments under the Commonwealth/State Disability Agreement (CSDA). The report describes the collection process, consumers, their characteristics and the services they received, and the service outlets used. For the first time, estimates of consumers are presented, made possible by the use of a statistical linkage key to adjust for people receiving more than one service on the one day. Information on the methods used to produce this data is also included.

Integrating indicators, theory and practice in the disability services field

Examines how performance-related concepts such as 'input', 'output', 'outcome', 'efficiency' and 'effectiveness' are understood and put into practice in the disability services field. It provides a national framework in which current practice can be viewed in a theoretical context, and points the way forward for national indicator development. The policy and data relevance of this work extend beyond the disability services field to the community services field more generally.

Performance indicators: review of current practice in the Australian disability services field

The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare was commissioned by the National Disability Administrators in 1999 to undertake a project that focused on integrating theoretical and practical approaches to indicating performance in the disability services area. This working paper summarises much of the information provided by the administrators to the AIHW on the current approaches in the disability field. Current until 30 June 2001.

The definition, incidence and prevalence of acquired brain injury in Australia

This report presents newly derived estimates of rates of hospitalisation associated with acquired brain injury, and the prevalence and demographic patterns of disability attributable to acquired brain injury in Australia. Definitions of acquired brain injury used in the disability and medical fields, and in legislative and administrative contexts are critically examined, and existing estimates of the incidence and prevalence of acquired brain injury, and of the proportion of incident cases that lead to long-term disability, are reviewed.

Disability support services provided under the Commonwealth/State Disability Agreement: national data 1998

Presents data on services directly provided or funded by government under the CSDA. These data were collected in the second half of 1998, and cover all State, Territory, and Commonwealth CSDA services. This is the fourth annual data collection. The report describes the data collection process, the services used and the characteristics of the service users. It also includes data on the pilot testing of a statistical linkage key in four jurisdictions, and the reasons for its introduction.

Indigenous disability data, current status and future prospects: Report on proceedings of the Canberra workshop April 1998

A report on the proceedings of the Indigenous disability data workshop, held in Canberra in April 1998. The workshop arose out of a long-recognised need for accurate information about the prevalence and types of disability among Indigenous people. Prior to the workshop, little was known about what data were collected or the quality of available statistics in the area. The workshop aimed to explore the current and future status of disability data for Indigenous people. The report is a joint program of the ABS, AIHW and DHFS.

Hostels in Australia 1995-96: a statistical overview

A companion volume to Nursing Homes in Australia 1995-96, this report presents data for Australian hostels and their residents for 1995-96. It focuses on the characteristics of hostel residents (including age, sex, marital status and dependency levels) and the patterns of service use (including length of stay, admissions and separations).

The Definition of Disability in Australia: Moving towards National Consistency

A discussion paper The Definition of Disability in Australia: Moving Towards National Consistency, prepared by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, will be launched at the AIHW on Thursday by Dr Bedirhan Ustun, Senior Scientist in the Division of Mental Health & Prevention of Substance Abuse at the World Health Organization. Dr Ustun is coordinating the revision of the International Classification of Impairments, Disabilities and Handicaps (ICIDH-2) which involves a number of international collaborating centres. The AIHW is the Australian collaborating centre for ICIDH.
