The impact of the use of drugs and alcohol within the Australian population has become increasingly evident. The AIHW has estimated that in 2003 around 16,700 deaths were drug or alcohol related.
The AIHW collects data and reports on two broad categories of drug- and alcohol-related information. These categories are general population information, which includes the prevalence and impact of drug and alcohol use within Australia, and service-related information which details the characteristics of alcohol and other drug treatment services and their clients. The AIHW processes for collecting and reporting service and population information have been developed in response to the information needs identified in the National Drug Strategy Framework.
Within the Institute, responsibility for analysing and reporting population-based drug and alcohol data and analysis and reporting on alcohol and drug treatment services and their clients is undertaken by the Drug Survey and Services Unit.
A number of other collaborating units also hold drug- and alcohol-related data within their broader collections.
