The National Drug Strategy Household Surveys (NDSHS) are national surveys providing cross sectional data on alcohol and other drug use in Australia. The surveys provide estimates of licit and illicit drug use. The surveys also measure community attitudes to drug use, and awareness of and community support for various drug-related policies.
Purpose of the survey
The objectives of the NDSHS are to:
- provide data on the level, patterns and trends in the use of tobacco, alcohol and other substances;
- identify groups with a high risk for drug abuse;
- measure community awareness and knowledge of licit and illicit drugs, and;
- measure community support for various drug-related policies.
The 2007 National Drug Strategy Household Survey was the most recently run version of the survey.
Access to the dataset
Researchers can access the full datasets from the 1998, 2001, 2004 and 2007 surveys via the Australian Social Science Data Archive (ASSDA) [external link].
