Windows Systems Specialist

Background

The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) has five Groups: Information and Strategy; Business; Health and Functioning; Welfare and Housing; and Economics and Health Services.
The Information and Strategy Group is responsible for co-coordinating the AIHW's work on: informatics (including metadata, data standards and classifications); statistical methods and training; privacy and ethics; providing secretariat and other support services to national information committees in the health, community services and housing fields; and providing executive support to the AIHW Board, Director and Deputy Director.
The role of the Data and Information Technology Unit is to support and develop the Institute's computing and data management systems to meet its current and future needs and to provide staff with computing and data support services.

The occupant of this position provides Windows systems management and level 2 HelpDesk support and assists with the design, development and operation of the Institute's computing environment.

Duty Statement

Under general direction of a System Manager:

  1. Assist with the management and administration of Windows systems in an integrated environment, including associated networks, peripherals, data storage, archive and backup.
  2. Provide high quality user oriented level 2 Help Desk support for account management, hardware, network and operating systems. This includes rostered phone support periods.
  3. Assist in the evaluation, selection, procurement and installation of hardware and software components.
  4. Prepare and maintain documentation and procedures.
  5. Obtain quotations, arrange purchasing, and stock-take IT hardware.
  6. Assist with maintaining and configuration of the Institute's PABX system.

Selection Criteria

  1. Knowledge of and experience in the configuration and management of Windows Server 20003 and other components in a LAN/WAN environment. Experience with VMWare is an advantage.
  2. Well developed developmental, diagnostic and analytical skills.
  3. Significant user support experience, including well-developed and effective liaison, oral and written communication, and support skills.
  4. Well developed organisational skills, including the ability to determine priorities, develop local strategies, procedures and work practices, and manage less complex projects.
  5. Relevant tertiary qualifications or membership of a professional computing body, or equivalent experience.
  6. Commitment to good employment and workplace relations practices, including Workplace Diversity and Occupational Health and Safety.

Desirable

  1. Knowledge of and experience of Unix, preferably Sun Solaris.
