Corporate Database Administrator
Background
The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) has five Groups: Information and Strategy; Business; Health and Functioning; Welfare and Housing; and Economics and Health Services.
The Information and Strategy Group is responsible for co-coordinating the AIHW's work on: informatics (including metadata, data standards and classifications); statistical methods and training; privacy and ethics; providing secretariat and other support services to national information committees in the health, community services and housing fields; and providing executive support to the AIHW Board, Director and Deputy Director.
The role of the Data and Information Technology Unit is to support and develop the Institute's computing and data management systems to meet its current and future needs and to provide staff with computing and data support services.
Duty Statement
- Administer, advise on and develop the corporate database environment so that it meets the Institute's business needs.
- Undertake database design and related applications development.
- Install, configure, maintain and support databases, database related software, and data analysis tools.
- Contribute to the resolution of information technology problems associated with the collection and compilation of statistical data.
- Assist with the administration of UNIX (Solaris, Linux) systems in a mixed Unix/Windows environment.
Selection Criteria
- Highly developed analytical skills combined with significant experience in the design, development, implementation and support of relational databases, and knowledge of post-relational databases.
- Highly developed ability to manage and support Oracle software and databases in a complex data environment, well developed SQL and PLSQL programming skills, and experience with other modern programming languages.
- The ability to effectively plan, develop and implement projects within a diverse workplace and to deliver customer focused outcomes.
- Good interpersonal and people management skills.
- A high level of oral and written communication skills, including the ability to document systems, processes and databases effectively.
- Some knowledge or experience of Microsoft Windows XP, Microsoft Office 2003, BrioQuery, Cognos, and the SAS statistical analysis products is advantageous.
- Demonstrated commitment to people management principles and practices (including the APS Values, Equity and Diversity, and Occupational Health and Safety).
- Relevant tertiary qualifications or membership of a professional computing body, or equivalent experience.
