Windows Systems Manager

Background

The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) has five Groups: Information and Strategy; Business; Health and Functioning; Welfare and Housing; and Economics and Health Services.
The Information and Strategy Group is responsible for co-coordinating the AIHW's work on: informatics (including metadata, data standards and classifications); statistical methods and training; privacy and ethics; providing secretariat and other support services to national information committees in the health, community services and housing fields; and providing executive support to the AIHW Board, Director and Deputy Director.
The role of the Data and Information Technology Unit is to support and develop the Institute's computing and data management systems to meet its current and future needs and to provide staff with computing and data support services.

The occupant of this position manages the design, development and operation of the Institute's Microsoft Windows systems and IT helpdesk.

Duty Statement

Under general direction of the Head of the Data and Information Technology Unit:

  1. Provide a high quality user oriented Microsoft Windows system, hardware, and network management service which includes configuration, fault identification and rectification on servers, workstations, and infrastructure, computerised PABX, and peripherals.
  2. Play a major role in the design and development of the Institute's computing environment.
  3. Maintain up to date security on Microsoft Windows systems.
  4. Manage the day-to-day operation of the Institute's IT Helpdesk
  5. Manage the evaluation, selection, procurement and installation of related hardware and software components.
  6. Maintain up to date documentation of changes, procedures, and hardware and software configurations.
  7. Supervise and manage staff as required.

Selection Criteria

  1. Advanced knowledge of and experience in the configuration and management of Microsoft Windows 2003 server and Windows XP systems, and related components in a LAN/WAN environment.
  2. Advanced knowledge of and experience in the management of an IT helpdesk/servicedesk
  3. Well developed organisational skills, including the ability to determine priorities, develop strategies, procedures and work practices, supervise staff, and manage multiple projects.
  4. Well developed written and oral communication ability.
  5. Relevant tertiary qualifications or membership of a professional computing body, or equivalent experience.
  6. Commitment to good employment and workplace relations practices, including Workplace Diversity and Occupational Health and Safety.
  7. Experience with integrated UNIX and Windows 2000/2003 server systems.
