The successful applicant will take a leadership role in projects, involving the compilation and analysis of data and the writing of reports and papers on a broad range of issues related to Australia's health and community services labour force. The role requires well-developed leadership and project management skills, as well as strong analytical, problem solving and communication skills.

The Labour Force Unit works collaboratively with state, territory and federal governments to improve the consistency, comparability and relevance of health and community services labour force information.

The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare is an Australian Government statutory authority responsible for providing the nation with reliable, regular and current facts and figures on the health and welfare of Australians. Duty statement

In accordance with Diversity and Participative Management principles undertake one or more of the following tasks:

  1. Manage a team responsible for the collation, processing and reporting of national health and community services labour force data.
  2. Supervise and undertake work associated with the analysis and interpretation of national health and community services labour force data.
  3. Supervise and undertake the development of data standards relevant to the collection of health labour force data.
  4. Maintain effective liaison with data providers, other government agencies and professional organisations.
  5. Oversee and contribute to the preparation of material for publications, reports, meeting papers and other media based on Institute standards including graphical and tabular representations.
  6. Represent the Institute at meetings and conferences.
  7. Provide expert advice to the Institute and other bodies on matters relevant to the work program, and assist with other functions of the Institute as required.

Selection criteria

These criteria must be read in conjunction with the duty statement for the position, and the conditions of engagement for the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare.

  1. Ability to manage projects, including the capacity to plan, undertake and supervise projects and a high level of organisational ability.
  2. High order communication and interpersonal skills, including a capacity for liaison and negotiation on complex issues.
  3. High-level conceptual and analytical skills, including the ability to interpret tables, to identify data problems and suggest solutions, and to develop new approaches to the collection of national data.
  4. High-level writing skills, including demonstrated experience with the writing of analytical reports.
  5. A knowledge of, and demonstrated commitment to, the principles and practices of Equal Employment Opportunity, Industrial Democracy and Occupational Health and Safety, and an ability to apply them to staff management and work practices.
