Professor Tony Jorm

Australia's health: vital signs vital statisticsProfessor Tony Jorm graduated with a PhD in psychology from the University of New South Wales in 1977. In 1984 he was appointed to the Centre for Mental Health Research at the Australian National University where he is now Professor and Director. Since that time he has carried out research on the epidemiology of mental disorders, focussing particularly on dementia and depression in the elderly, and on public knowledge and beliefs about mental disorders.

Prof Jorm is the author of 12 books or monographs, 270 journal articles and over 20 chapters in edited volumes. He has been awarded a Doctor of Science for his research and elected a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia. He is a member of the Research Committees of both the National Health and Medical Research Council and the Australian Rotary Health Research Fund. He is a past President of the Australasian Society for Psychiatric Research and former Editor-in-Chief of the Australasian Journal on Ageing.

He has been listed in ISI HighlyCited.com as one of the most cited researchers in Psychology/Psychiatry of the past 20 years. Other awards he has received include the Ewald Busse Award from the International Association of Gerontology and the Founders' Medal from the Australasian Society for Psychiatric Research.
