Professor David Ellwood
David Ellwood is the Professor of Obstetrics
and Gynaecology at the Australian National University Medical School and is also
the Associate Dean of the Canberra Clinical School. He is a senior specialist at
The Canberra Hospital, and a sub-specialist in maternal-fetal medicine. He is
also the Director of the Fetal Medicine Unit, which provides high-risk pregnancy
management to a wide range of patients in the ACT and regional NSW.
He is the current President of the Perinatal Society of Australia and New Zealand, a member of the executive of Women's Hospitals Australasia and the current Chair of the Maternal-Fetal Medicine committee of the RANZCOG. His research interests have been wide and varied and include the prediction of preterm delivery, postnatal depression and the use of ultrasound in predicting adverse pregnancy outcome.
He has nearly 20 years experience in both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training and has been responsible for setting up new training programs in obstetrics and gynaecology at two teaching hospitals. He has also been extensively involved in curriculum development for undergraduate teaching in obstetrics and gynaecology.
He has been involved in management of maternity services for many years and has held senior management positions in three Australian teaching hospitals. In recent times he has developed an interest in risk management in maternity services and was instrumental in bringing the Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO) program to Australia and New Zealand. He has been the inaugural chair of the ALSO Advisory Board for the past 3 years.
