Having completed my Bachelors of Commerce and Science at Melbourne University majoring in Actuarial Studies and Statistics, I was looking for a graduate position which involves statistics and I accepted a graduate role in the Data Linkage Unit at AIHW.
One great thing about AIHW is the amount of learning and development opportunities available, which aim to develop professional skills and knowledge in various areas. Everyone is encouraged to participate, and in fact there is a regular pay increase for employees who attend more than five training workshops in a year!
There are various graduate events and functions running throughout the year. Moreover, there are many activities such as weekly soccer and table tennis which is great for meeting new people.
Within the Data Linkage Unit I use SAS to apply a probabilistic model for matching records between two or more databases. Soon after starting, I was put on several linkage projects which were very hands on. This was a great experience because I had the opportunity to take on all aspects of the projects from communicating with the client through to technical work.
