The AIHW reports local-level health performance reporting against a set of 48 indicators that have been agreed by all Australian governments. Thirty-one indicators relate to Medicare Locals and 17 indicators relate to the performance of Local Hospital Networks and hospitals. From 1 July 2015, the Australian Government replaced Medicare Locals with 31 Primary Health Network areas.

The AIHW performs extensive data analysis to ensure the information reported is reliable and comparable at a very local level, as the data sources to report on these indicators have in the past mostly been used for reporting at the state and territory level. Indicators that have not yet been reported may require further development of existing health information systems to enable reporting at the local level.

The 48 indicators are reported in two streams: Hospital Performance and Healthy Communities. The reports in which specific indicators have been covered appear in the table below.
