Hospitals

Overview

The Institute compiles and reports on a range of data on hospitals, detailing the characteristics of public hospitals, admitted patients and the care they receive in hospital, and elective surgery and emergency department waiting times.

Australian hospital statistics 2008–09 summarises the latest data on public hospitals and admitted patients in public and private hospitals. The section Australia's hospitals 2008–09 at a glance provides a summary of the report's information on Australian hospitals. It illustrates changes in hospital activity over time and some differences between hospitals in the public and private sectors.

The Australian hospital statistics 2008–09 report has undergone substantial revision. Statistics reported in the hard copy are more summarised than those presented in previous versions of the report, with smaller tables, graphs and figures interspersed in the text. Supplementary tables are included at the end of each chapter presenting more detailed statistics. All data published in previous years reports are available for 2008–09 in either the Australian hospital statistics 2008–09 report, the accompanying CD or presented as additional Internet tables.

Accompanying the release of  Australian hospital statistics 2008–09, is the publication of the bulletin Australia's hospitals 2008–09 at a glance. This bulletin replaces the previous Hospitals at a Glance section of the publication, and provides a summary of selected statistics.
