Australian hospital statistics

An annual report is published on hospital activity and operations. Australian hospital statistics summarises the latest data on public hospitals, on public hospital elective surgery waiting lists, and on admitted and non-admitted patients in public and private hospitals.

Since 1993-94, the Australian hospital statistics reports have included analyses of the majority of data elements in the National Hospital Morbidity Database and the National Public Hospital Establishments Database. Information and analyses from the National Elective Surgery Waiting Times Data Collection have been included since the 2000-01 collection year, and analyses from the National Non-admitted Patient Emergency Department Database have been included since the 2003-04 collection year.

Admitted patient care

The Australian hospital statistics reports include chapters describing a range of information including the administrative and demographic characteristics of admitted patients, their diagnoses and the procedures performed.

Public hospital establishments

The Australian hospital statistics reports describe public hospitals in terms of their size, distribution of beds, staff employed and specialised services provided. Information and summary tables on public hospital recurrent expenditure and revenues are also provided.

Non-admitted patient care

The Australian hospital statistics reports include summary data on outpatient clinic care and emergency department presentations to public hospitals.

Elective surgery waiting times

The Australian hospital statistics reports (and separate publications before 2000-01) include summary tables on various waiting time statistics such as the distribution of days waited, admissions for waiting lists and additions and removals from waiting lists. Information is also included by the specialty of surgeon who was to perform the elective surgery and by indicator procedure.
