What is the Commonwealth State Housing Agreement (CSHA)?

The 2003 CSHA is the second such multilateral agreement signed by the Commonwealth and State governments. The aim of the CSHA is to facilitate access to affordable, appropriate and secure housing assistance for those who most need it, for the duration of their need. Housing assistance under the CSHA is provided through the following programs: public rental housing, state owned and managed Indigenous housing, community housing, Crisis Accommodation Program, home purchase assistance and private rent assistance.

What is the National Housing Data Agreement (NHDA)?

The NHDA is a subsidiary agreement to the CSHA and provides the framework for a cooperative approach to national housing information development. The aims of the agreement are:

  • to ensure that nationally relevant housing data collected throughout Australia are consistent and compatible between the different collection; and otherwise
  • to improve the quality and access to housing data at the national level, while maintaining and protecting the confidentiality of the data

How many households are assisted by public rental housing, state owned and managed Indigenous housing and community housing?

At 30 June 2006, the number of households assisted was:

  • 333,968 for public rental housing
  • 12,386 for state owned and managed Indigenous housing
  • 28,582 for community housing

Could I be eligible for housing assistance?

Housing assistance is available for low income families and individuals, and is increasingly targeted to people with urgent needs, for example those who cannot afford to rent in the private market or are homeless.
