Indicator Id: 400
Description: The proportion of people with asthma who have had recent spirometry
Indicator Source: Australian Centre for Asthma Monitoring (ACAM)
Data Available: Yes
Data Source(s): Medicare Australia (prev. Health Insurance Commission)
Where Reported: AIHW: Asthma in Australia series
Data Issues: A major limitation of these data is that there is no clinical information that enables the identification of spirometry that was performed for asthma as opposed to other respiratory conditions.
Numerator: Number of claims for spirometry in a given year for people with asthma
Denominator: Total number of people with current asthma
Suggested Reporting Categories: Data were presented for people aged 5 to 34 years, for whom it was highly probably that spirometry was used in the management of asthma.
AIHW Comments: The measurement of this indicator is limited. The development of a data source to determine spirometry for assessment of asthma is needed for accurate monitoring.
