Requirements for Indigenous identification in National Minimum Data Sets

Overview

The sections below provide links to data dictionaries and related material for each of the national minimum data sets in which information on the Indigenous status of clients/patients is included. In most cases, recording of information on Indigenous status is consistent with the national minimum requirements for recording Indigenous status which are outlined in the National Community Services Data Dictionary (NCSDD), Version 4, the National Health Data Dictionary (NHDD), Version 13 and the National Housing Assistance Data Dictionary (NHADD), Version 3,  and are also accessible through METeOR. The NHADD also recognises and identifies the Indigenous household and discrete Indigenous community.

The Aged Care Assessment Program Data Dictionary, version 1.0 outlines the minimum requirements for collecting information within this program, including requirements for identifying Indigenous people.

Home and Community Care (HACC) MDS
HACC requirements for identifying Indigenous people are outlined in the HACC Data Dictionary, version 1.0, the Guidelines to the HACC MDS and the Orientation Work Book for the HACC MDS. Requirements for the HACC MDS Version 2 are also available.

Disability services

Commonwealth/ State/ Territory Disability Agreement (CSTDA) NMDS

The most recent CSTDA NMDS data guide contains information on how to collect information on the Indigenous status of clients, and an example of how these data may be used.

CSTDA NMDS workbook activities: reproduces slides used in training, and all training activities, including material relating to identifying the Indigenous status and country of birth of clients.

The SAAP national data collection: Collectors manual contains some instructions on completing the question 'Does the client identify as being of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander origin?'
