Cancer survival shows significant improvement

Survival after cancer is improving significantly in Australia, although not for all types of cancer. Survival is also better among the more advantaged groups in the population. These findings are presented in a report released today by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW), together with Cancer Australia and the Australasian Association of Cancer Registries.

Train travel 10 times safer than car travel

The risk of serious injury, based on distance travelled, is more than 10 times greater for people travelling by car compared with those travelling by rail, according to a new report released today by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) and the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government.

Number of community aged care packages increasing

A new report on the programs that help people who might otherwise go into residential aged care by providing them with help in their own homes, shows that by 30 June 2007 there were almost 22 community care packages for every 1,000 people aged 70 and over.

Over 4,500 homeless entered public housing in 06-07

A new report from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare shows that in 2006-07, priority housing allocations made up 42% of all public rental housing and state owned and managed Indigenous housing allocations, including 4,600 households that were given priority due to homelessness.

Mental health spending on the way to $3 billion

A report on mental health services released today by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) found that expenditure on state and territory mental health services as a whole increased on average by 5.2% per year (after adjusting for inflation) from 2001-02 to 2005-06, to $2.7 billion.

Impact of 'silent' osteoporosis on Australians

At least 600,000 Australians are affected by osteoporosis, a disease that causes bones to become fragile and weak and increasing the risk of fracture, according to a report released today by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare and Osteoporosis Australia.

More Australians receiving help from SAAP

It is estimated that about 187,900 people who are homeless, or at risk of becoming homeless, received some form of assistance from the Supported Accommodation Assistance Program (SAAP) during 2006-07, according to a report released today by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW).
