The GRIM Books

The AIHW has compiled long-term mortality data on selected causes of death by age and sex for each year from the beginning of the 20th century, called the GRIM (General Record of Incidence of Mortality) books. They are interactive Excel workbooks updated annually containing comprehensive long-term mortality data on selected causes of death by age and sex for each year. The GRIM Books are currently available as National books and State/Territories (S&T) books.

Mortality over the twentieth century in Australia  publication

Mortality over the twentieth century in Australia is a comprehensive analysis of the causes of death from 1907 to 2000. Although it is well known that life expectancy for Australians increased over the last century, analyses presented in this report show how the changes in the causes of death help to explain why we are living longer. This report describes patterns and trends in mortality over the century, highlighting the great successes but also some areas where improvements are still clearly needed.

Trends in deaths publication

Trends in deaths is a comprehensive analysis of the patterns of death in Australia over the past 15 years. It presents contemporary data for 16 causes of death that are of particular interest in the health field or where behaviour plays a major part. The data are analysed by socioeconomic status, country of birth, State/Territory and geographic area, Indigenous status and international comparison. The in-depth analyses presented in the publication are complemented by the study of mortality data for a further 174 diseases for the years 1987-1998.
