The Ageing and Aged Care Unit engages in a variety of statistical reporting, research, evaluation and data development projects in relation to the well-being, health and patterns of service use of older Australians. The Unit analyses and disseminates national information on aged care services; the informal care sector; older people's health and social participation, using both administrative data sources and national population data.
The Unit acquires, manages and analyses the AIHW's holdings of data about residential aged care, community-based aged care packages and the HACC program. The Unit works closely with the Data Linkage Unit to analyse and report on the dynamics of the aged care system as a whole and its relationship with other key sectors (e.g. acute care). It leads the AIHW's role as a partner in the Primary Dementia Collaborative Research Centre at the University of New South Wales.
