The main functions of the Cancer and Screening Unit are to: monitor and report on national cancer statistics and population-based cancer-screening indicators; and facilitate epidemiological research into cancer and mortality outcomes by undertaking ethics committee-approved record linkages between research cohorts and the Australian Cancer Database and the National Death Index.

The Unit works in collaboration with the Australasian Association of Cancer Registries (AACR) to maintain and improve the Australian Cancer Database. The Unit also collaborates with the AACR, Department of Health and Ageing, Cancer Australia, the National Breast Cancer Centre and other Australian cancer bodies to develop cancer information in Australia to assist policy makers, service delivery planners and managers, and consumers.
