Almost 7,000 young people were under youth justice supervision in Australia on an average day in 2011–12, due to their involvement or alleged involvement in crime. About 6,000 young people were supervised in the community and the remaining 1,000 were in detention. Young people spent a total of 6 months, on average, under supervision during the year.
