This report presents statistics on trends in the employment of nurses and midwives in Australia. It is based on the main findings of the 2005 national survey of nursing and midwifery. Information presented includes a national and stat/territory overview of the number and characteristics of nurses and midwives, their geographic region and overall supply.

Notes and corrections

The current version of the publication and spreadsheets are presented above. Previous versions of files that have been updated or corrected are presented below.

  1. As data for 2005 were unable to be provided by Victoria to the AIHW, Nursing and Midwifery Labour Force Survey estimates for that jurisdiction for 2005 are based on responses to the 2006 survey weighted to 2005 benchmarks. (18 January 2008)
  2. In South Australia the same survey form was used for 2005 as in 2003. (18 January 2008)
  3. FTE rates (based on 38 hours worked per week) by region were added to the Internet tables to align with data in the published report based on 38 hour weeks. (11 March 2009)

  4. Estimates for Northern Territory data have been suppressed in Table 12 due to the low response rate in that jurisdiction (13.7%). (9 April 2009)
