This report presents demographic and labour force statistics on the medical profession in Australia and trends in the number of employed doctors. It is based on the main findings of the 2005 national survey of registered medical practitioners. Information presented includes a national and state/territory overview of the number of medical practitioners, their geographic region and overall supply.

Notes and corrections

The current version of the publication is presented above. Previous versions of files that have been updated or corrected are presented below.

  1. (18 January 2008Due to low response rate to the 2004 Medical Labour Force Survey in the NT, estimates for that jurisdiction for 2005 are based on responses to the 2004 survey weighted to 2005 benchmarks.
  2. (14/02/2008) Numbers of employed medical practitioners in 2001 in Table 9, and FTE rate for 2001 in Table 19 have been revised to correct the figures provided in the previous version. The associated text has also been amended to reflect the revised figures.
