'Australian hospital statistics 2009-10: emergency department care and elective surgery waiting times' presents information relating to emergency department care in major public hospitals and public hospital elective surgery waiting times for the period 1 July 2009 to 30 June 2010. In 2009-10: almost 6 million emergency department presentations were provided by major public hospitals, with 70% of patients receiving treatment within an appropriate time for their urgency (triage category); about 610,000 patients were admitted to Australian public hospitals from waiting lists for elective surgery, with 50% of patients admitted within 36 days.

  1. The following text added at the end of Table 3.3 on page 33, under notes.
    "Following the creation of the integrated Albury-Wodonga Health Service, the management of the Albury Base Hospital transferred to Victoria on 1 July 2009. Activity for this hospital is included in Victoria for 2009–10, whereas it was included in New South Wales for 2008–09. There were 2,478 admissions from elective surgery waiting lists in 2009–10 for Albury Base Hospital. If they had been counted in New South Wales, the total for New South Wales would have been 200,981." (30 November 2010)
  2. Chapter 3 has been updated following a resupply of elective surgery waiting times data by the Northern Territory. (8 December 2010)
