National comorbidity initiative: a review of data collections relating to people with coexisting substance use and mental health disorders

Under Australia's National Illicit Drug Strategy, a National Comorbidity Initiative was established to improve service coordination and treatment outcomes for people with coexisting mental health and substance use disorders. A priority area under this Initiative is to improve data systems and collections methods within the mental health and alcohol and other drug sectors to manage comorbidity more effectively.This project, commissioned by the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing, identifies, reviews and reports on the current state of data collections relating to people with coexisting substance use and mental health disorders ('comorbidity') in Australia.

Australian hospital statistics 2003-04

Australian Hospital Statistics 2003-04 provides an eleventh year in the Institute's comprehensive annual statistical reporting of statistics on Australia's hospitals. Detailed information is presented on hospital care and hospitals in 2003-04, as are summaries of changes over time, and comparisons between public and private hospitals. Included are statistics on admissions to public and private hospitals in 2003-04, covering the age and sex of patients, diagnoses, procedures, lengths of stay and waiting times for elective surgery. Also included are hospital expenditure, revenue and bed numbers, and a range of hospital performance indicators reported using the National Health Performance Framework. Included for the first time in 2003-04 are more comprehensive statistics about patients who presented to selected public hospital emergency departments. The statistics now cover patients' demographics, triage categories, waiting times, durations of care and a range of other data. This report is a useful resource for health planners, administrators and researchers with an interest in the Australian hospital system.

Homeless people in SAAP, SAAP national data collection annual report 2003-04

This is the eighth annual report on the Supported Accommodation Assistance Program (SAAP) National Data Collection. It provides an overview of assistance given to clients and their children by the Program in 2003-04. SAAP provides transitional supported accommodation and related support services to help homeless people - including women and children escaping domestic violence - achieve the maximum possible degree of self-reliance and independence.

Mental health services in Australia 2002-03 describes the characteristics and activity of Australia's mental health services including ambulatory and residential mental health-related care provided by hospitals, community-based services, general practitioners, private psychiatrists and some disability support services. Information on the broad trends in mental health care is presented in an easy-to-use summary. Detailed statistics show the hospital care of patients admitted with a mental health-related diagnosis, the services, beds, staffing and expenditure in psychiatric hospitals and community-based services, and mental health-related medications prescribed by general practitioners and private psychiatrists. A special theme chapter has been included which presents an overview of the available data on the mental health care of people with schizophrenia.

National palliative care information collection: a way forward for community-based palliative care

This report was prepared by the AIHW with guidance from the Palliative Care Information Development Working Group. It explores issues associated with current data collection in the area of community based palliative care provision and recommends strategies leading to the collection of nationally comparable information.

Australian hospital statistics 2002-03

Australian Hospital Statistics 2002-03 is the tenth of the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare's annual summary reports describing the characteristics and activity of Australian hospitals. Detailed information is presented on hospital care and hospitals in 2002-03, along with summaries of changes over time, and comparisons between public and private hospitals. The report is based largely on data in the Institute's National Hospital Morbidity Database, the National Public Hospital Establishments Database and the National Elective Surgery Waiting Times Data Collection, which are compiled each year with the assistance of the state and territory health authorities.

Children accompanying homeless clients 2002-03: a report from the SAAP National Data Collection

This report provides an overview and analysis of accompanying children in SAAP in 2002-03, including their demographic characteristics, patterns of SAAP use and the reasons why their parents or guardians sought SAAP support. There is also information about the services children receive from SAAP agencies, and their living arrangements before and after support. Domestic violence is a major theme of the report, as the majority of children accompany their mother or other female guardian who has reported domestic violence as a reason for seeking SAAP assistance.

Day therapy centre census 2002: a report of the 2002 Census conducted at the request of and with funding from the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing

The Day Therapy Centre Census 2002 presents the results of a comprehensive national data collection of Day Therapy Centres and their care recipients. The Day Therapy Centre Program subsidises a range of therapies for frail older people living in the community and for residents of Australian Government funded residential aged care. Therapies include physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and podiatry. The data collected provide an insight into the needs and circumstances of those accessing this care and provide information on current service delivery patterns.The data in this report are useful for aged and community care service planners, service providers and researchers in the field.

Report on the evaluation of the National Minimum Data Set for Admitted Patient Care

This report presents the Institute's most comprehensive evaluation to date of the quality and consistency of data collected under the National Minimum Data Set for Admitted Patient Care.The report is a useful resource for health information managers, researchers, state and territory data providers and all users of data based on this National Minimum Data Set.

Admitted patient palliative care in Australia 1999-00

The National Palliative Care Strategy seeks to achieve consistent reporting on palliative care services across all service delivery settings. National information about community-based palliative care is not yet available, however, this report presents part of the picture by providing an overview of palliative care delivered in Australian hospitals during 1999-00.Admitted Patient Palliative Care in Australia 1999-00 describes hospital establishments that provide palliative care, and includes information on the demographic characteristics of patients, diagnoses, procedures undergone, and average lengths of stay.

Detailed information is also presented on the characteristics and hospital care of the six million people admitted to public and private hospitals, including their age, sex, diagnoses and the procedures they underwent. Information on Australia's hospitals includes the number of hospitals and hospital beds, and key statistics on the resources, expenditure and revenue of public hospitals and on the services they provide. Data on a range of hospital performance indicators are also reported using the National Health Performance Committee's performance indicator framework.
