National Diabetes Register: statistical profile 1999-2005

Diabetes series no. 7

Diabetes is one of the leading threats to the health of Australians-it is a large health, social and economic burden for individuals with the disease, their families and the community. 'National Diabetes Register: statistical profile 1999-2005' is the third statistical report of the National Diabetes Register (NDR). The NDR records new cases of insulin-treated diabetes. This report describes the characteristics of registrants, including type of diabetes, age at diagnosis, sex, geographical location, country of birth, Indigenous status, mortality and also provides incidence estimates. This report plays an important role in monitoring the levels and trends of diabetes in Australia and as a resource for researchers, policy makers, health professionals and anyone interested in diabetes in Australia.

Asthma in Australia: findings from the 2004-05 National Health Survey

Asthma series

This report presents asthma results from the 2004-05 National Health Survey. The National Health Survey is conducted by the Australian Bureau of Statistics every three years and currently provides the only nation-wide source of self-reported experiences with asthma including prevalence, management, quality of life and health-related behaviours. This report makes comparisons between people with and without asthma, investigates the effect of social and demographic characteristics and compares the findings from this, most recent, survey with those the previous National Health Survey conducted in 2001. It will be of value to all those interested in having updated information on the status of asthma in Australia, such as those involved in asthma care and government policy makers.

Socioeconomic inequalities in cardiovascular disease in Australia

AIHW bulletin no. 37

It has been well established in Australia that people who are socioeconomically disadvantaged experience higher rates of cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality than other Australians. Further, there is evidence that the differential has widened, with relative CVD mortality inequality between Australians from the most disadvantaged areas and those from the least disadvantaged areas being higher in recent years than it was in the mid-1980s. A similar trend of widening socioeconomic inequalities in CVD mortality has also been observed in other OECD countries. This bulletin examines inequalities in CVD mortality over the 10-year period from 1992 to 2002 and hospitalisations over the period 1996-97 to 2003-04 for people aged 25-74 years to try to answer key questions in relation to mortality and significant morbidity requiring hospitalisation.
