Oral health of health cardholders attending for dental care in the private and public sectorsDental statistics and research series no. 50Health cardholders who visit a public dentist have a similar level of oral health and receive similar dental care as those who visit a private dentist. This publication presents findings on health cardholders attending for dental care in the private and public sector using data from the National Survey of Adult Oral Health 2004-06. Health cardholders such as age pensioners and the unemployed have government entitlement cards and are eligible for public dental care. But while dental health and care was similar for those using either public or private dentists, this may reflect a general level of disadvantage common to all cardholders. Where differences did exist, the differences consistently involved either poorer oral health status or less desirable service patterns for those who visited the public sector compared to the private sector. Projected demand and supply for dental visits in Australia: analysis of the impact of changes in key inputsDental statistics and research series no. 38How many dentists do we need in Australia to meet the future demand for dental visits and enable people to maintain good dental health? This report provides estimates and projections of demand and supply of dental visits, assessing the impact of changes in policy direction or social and professional trends. A range of scenarios are presented as a means of understanding current and potential future developments, in order to inform policy makers and service provision planning. This policy analysis provides revised assessments of previously published supply and demand projections, giving a vital tool to underpin future decision making. Practice activity patterns of dentists in Australia: trends over time by age of patientsDental statistics and research series no. 32'Practice activity patterns of dentists in Australia: trends over time by age of patients' presents findings on the activity of dentists in private general practice from The Longitudinal Study of Dentists' Practice Activity. Data for this study, based on a random sample of dentists, have been collected at five-year intervals since 1983-84. Trends over time in the characteristics of patients and visits, and services provided are presented by age of patients for the period 1993-94 to 2003-04. With increasing numbers of older patients who are retaining their teeth, these patients may have complex treatment needs that require more services and take longer to complete. These changes in oral health have resulted in decreased visits for dental problems and increased visits for recall/maintenance care among patients aged 45-64 years and 65 years or more. Such changes in oral health, demographics and use of services are expected to impact on the practice activity of dentists. Authored by Brennan DS & Spencer AJ. Published 10 May 2006; AIHW cat. no. Demand for dental careDSRU research report no. 8Demand for dental care reflects people's want or desire for dental care and willingness to pay at market prices. Demand is expressed through the use of dental services and hence can be measured in dental visits made and services received in a year. This report provides information in the change in demand for dental care among Australians over the period 1979 to 1995. It also presents information on the projected demand for dental care through to 2010. This information is presented so as to understand fundamental changes occurring in dentistry. Dentist practice activity in Australia 1983-84 to 1998-99Dental statistics and research series no. 26Dentists' Practice Activity in Australia: 1983-84 to 1998-99 presents findings on the activity of dentists in private general practice from The Longitudinal Study of Dentists' Practice Activity. Data for this study, based on a random sample of dentists, have been collected in 1983-84, 1988-89, 1993-94 and 1998-99. Trends in practice activity and service provision are presented over the 15-year study period and patterns of service provision in 1998-99 are presented for the main areas of service, and the main diagnoses or conditions. The findings show that both practice patterns of dentists and the content of the services provided have changed over time, consistent with popular trends, towards improved oral health and maintenance of natural dentitions.
