Health Expenditure Bulletin No. 17 provides estimates of total expenditure on health services in Australia for 1989-90 to 1999-00. Expenditure estimates are presented at the aggregate level, as a proportion of gross domestic product (GDP), on a per person basis and by source of funding - Commonwealth, other government and non-government. Detailed national and State data on particular areas of expenditure are also included. The State data cover the years 1996-97 to 1998-99 and the national data the period from 1989-90 to 1998-99. The bulletin will be helpful to anyone interested in studying, analysing and comparing measures of health services expenditure in Australia.

Disease costing methodology used in the disease costs and impact study 1993-94

Describes in detail the methodology used by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare to measure health services use and expenditure for specific diseases and disease groups in Australia in 1993-94. A companion report, Health System Costs of Diseases and Injury in Australia 1993-94, provides estimates of the health system costs for each disease and injury group and area of expenditure. Other reports will provide detailed estimates for specific National Health Priority Areas - cancer, cardiovascular disease, injury, mental health and diabetes.

Expenditure on health for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people 2006-07

Expenditure on health and high care residential aged care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people amounted to $2,953 million in 2006-07, or 3% of national expenditure on health and high care residential aged care. In 2006-07, the average expenditure per person on health and high care residential aged care was $5,650 for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. For non-Indigenous people, the average expenditure per person was $4,621. The ratio of Indigenous to non-Indigenous expenditure per person was 1.22. For the Australian Government schemes of Medicare and the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS), total benefits paid per Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander person were 59% of the amount spent on non-Indigenous people. Expenditure on health for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people 2006-07 provides policy makers and program managers with detailed information for further analysis.

This report, the fourth comprehensive analysis of expenditures on health for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, examines expenditure in 2004-05 on health for Indigenous Australians and compares this with health expenditure for the rest of the Australian population. The report examines health resource distribution and funding by levels of government, the private sector, by region and by primary and secondary/tertiary health care. Estimates of health expenditure in 2004-05 are compared with estimates for previous years. The analyses presented here enable a better understanding of the different patterns of health service use by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Estimates of health expenditures in 2001-02 are compared with those published previously for 1998-99.

Funding sources for admitted patients in Australian hospitals, 2005-06

This report provides information on sources of funding for the provision of care to admitted patients in Australian hospitals in 2005-06. The report compares funding for privately insured and public patients in public and private hospitals and, in particular, compares the Australian Government contributions for these patients. The Australian Government¿s average contribution per episode for public patients was $1,367 for the subset of AR-DRGs used in the analysis, compared to the average contribution for privately insured patients in private hospitals of $1,364 per episode.
