AIHW bulletin no. 39Diabetes is one of the leading threats to the health of Australians - it is a chronic condition which places sufferers at increased risk of complications such as heart disease, stroke, kidney failure, blindness and amputation. It is well documented that the rate of diabetes is increasing both in Australia and world wide. There are several types of diabetes and it is the increase in Type 2 diabetes that is the main contributor to the alarming increase in diabetes prevalence.
