Australian hospital statistics 2004-05 continues the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare's series of summary reports describing the characteristics and activity of Australia's hospitals. It presents an overview of hospitals and hospital activity in Australia, further data on public hospitals, hospital performance indicator data, information on non-admitted patient care provided in public hospital emergency departments, and summary data on elective surgery waiting times for patients admitted to public hospitals.

Notes and corrections

The current version of the publication is presented above. Previous versions of files that have been updated or corrected are presented below.

  1. Appendix 7 has been updated following the publication of The state of our public hospitals, June 2006 report by the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing. (20 July 2006)
  2. Chapter 12 Supplementary tables provide additional state and territory tables by Diagnosis related groups in AR-DRG version 5.1. Appendix 4 tables have been updated to include lists of public and private hospitals. Appendix 5 tables have been updated to provide additional state and territory tables by Service related groups. (28 July 2006)
  3. Changes have been made to column headings for table A4.2 and A4.3. (30 October 2006)
  4. Figure 5.1, Tables 5.1-5.4, Figure 6.1 and Tables 6.1- 6.5 have been updated to correspond with the presentation in the hardcopy and PDF versions of the report. There were no changes to the data presented, and the update has been applied to the excel workbook only. (9 November 2006)
  5. Tables 2.1, 2.2, 2.6, 4.4, A4.5 and A4.6l have been updated to include 2004-05 private hospital data from the ABS's Private Health Establishments Collection that were not available at the time of publication. Tables 2.3 and 2.4 have been updated with 2004-05 public hospital cost weights for AR-DRG Version 5.0 that were unavailable at the time of publication, and to correct an error in the footnotes. Table 3.5 has been updated following corrections to some of the expenditure data. Table 10.6 has been replaced to correct an error in the original table. Chapter 12 has been updated following the release of the Round 9 2004-05 cost weights based on AR-DRG version 5.0. For Table 12.1, the Relative stay indexes for all categories have been updated. Note: The original Tables 4.13 and 7.13 in the PDF were incorrect. The correct versions of these tables were included in the excel workbooks.
