This report presents statistics on trends in the employment of nurses and midwives in Australia. It is based on the main findings of the 2004 national survey of nursing and midwifery. Information presented includes a national and state/territory overview of the number and characteristics of nurses and midwives, their geographical region and overall supply.

Previous versions of files that have been updated or corrected are presented below.

  1. The AIHW has found that the registration and enrolment numbers used for Western Australia were in error in the published report. The numbers used for Western Australia should be 26,528 nurses (21,884 registered and 4,644 enrolled) rather than 32,204 nurses (27,340 registered nurses and 4,864 enrolled nurses). (17 August 2007)
