Summarises data from two hospital data collections maintained by the AIHW. Key statistics are presented on the resources, expenditure and revenue of public hospitals and on the services they provide. Detailed statistics are also presented on the characteristics and hospital care of admitted patients in both public and private hospitals. Australian Hospital Statistics 1997-98 includes a focus on hospital performance indicators, analysis based on the AN-DRG (casemix) classification, and maps depicting hospitalisation rates by geographical area.

Since the publication of Australian Hospital Statistics 1997-98, some data have been updated for a small number of hospital separations, mainly
in New South Wales and Victoria. This update affected the data on patient days, average length of stay and age group for a small number of separations reported
for the private sector in New South Wales, and the age group only for the other separations. The tables presented here for the Australian Refined Diagnosis
Related Groups, Version 4.0, are based on the updated data, and will therefore have counts of patient days and average length of stay information that differ from
that presented elsewhere in the publication, for private hospitals in both New South Wales and Australia. Updates for the publication's other tables are available
from the Institute on request.

Australian Refined Diagnosis Related Groups for admitted patients, Version 4.0
The tables presenting data relating to AR-DRGs version 4.0 include information on the estimated cost by volume for each AR-DRG. For each version 4.0 AR-DRG,
national cost weights were estimated for 1997-98 for the public and private sectors by the Department of Health and Aged Care, through the National Hospital Cost
Data Collection. The cost weights represent the costliness of an AN-DRG relative to all other AN-DRGs, such that the average cost weight for all separations is
1.00. The data collection also provided national estimates of average costs for each separation for an AR-DRG with a cost weight of 1.00: $2,412 in the public
sector and $1,932 in the private sector. Separate cost weights were estimated for the public and private sectors because of the differences in the range of costs
recorded in public and private hospitals.
The Cost by volume figures in the tables were derived for each AR-DRG by multiplying the national estimated average cost for the AN-DRG by the number of
separations for the AR-DRG. For MDCs. the cost estimates for all the AN-DRGs within the MDC were then summed to produce an estimated cost for the MDC.The Cost by
volume figures in the tables are estimates only, intended for use as a guide to the approximate relative costs of hospital services during 1997-98. They should be
used with caution in any comparisons of the States and Territories or the public and private sectors.
Further information on the National Hospital Cost Data Collection is included in Appendix 8 of Australian Hospital Statistics 1997-98 and is available
from the Department of Health and Aged Care. Western Australian data presented in these Tables were not verified by the Health Department of Western Australia.
