The Retirement Villages Care Pilot initiative focuses on residents of retirement villages as a sub group of those older Australians who require additional services to assist in their choice to stay at home for as long as possible. The Pilot is designed to fill the gap between care services already available under self-provision arrangements and those that entail a higher degree of service. This will assist retirement village residents to remain in their familiar home environment longer without the need to move as their support needs change.

There were 200 places allocated for this initiative in 2002-03 comprising a mix of high and low care equivalent places to supplement care services already available in retirement villages.
