The AIHW has developed and maintained significant capacity in the development, analysis and presentation of rural health statistics in Australia since 2000. Over this time the organisation has also developed specific expertise on geographic classifications used in Australia.

Significant AIHW achievements in the rural health field include:

  • development of a rural health information framework, including over 30 indicators
  • analysis and presentation of rural health indicators in substantive technical reports and complementary, summary report profiles
  • substantive statistical analysis and reporting of mortality across geographic regions
  • identification of information limitations and data gaps within the rural health field
  • provision of expert advice and knowledge regarding heath data, rural health information and geographic classifications.


The majority of this work has been commissioned by the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing.
