The Rural Health Information Framework seeks to identify all the types of information that are important to develop an understanding of, and to monitor, the health of rural, regional and remote populations. The Framework specifies indicators across three areas: health status and outcomes; health determinants; and health system performance.

In 2005, the AIHW completed a major publication, reporting on as many of these indicators as was possible. Recently, this work was updated and published in two complementary reports, Rural, regional, remote health: indicators of health status and determinants of health and Rural, regional and remote health: indicators of health system performance.
