Description

Under the National Health Reform Agreement – National Partnership Agreement on Improving Public Hospital Services, Australia’s Health Ministers have requested the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare work together with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons to develop new national definitions for elective surgery urgency categories (including not ready for care) to be used in all Australian public hospitals.

The definitions will enable:

  • consistent and transparent reporting of comparable waiting times data both within and across states and territories
  • an appropriate balance between standardisation of practice and clinical decision making when assigning an urgency category
  • enhancement of elective surgery waiting list management to benefit patients and their families, clinicians, policy makers and service managers.
