The fieldwork for the 2019 National Drug Strategy Household Survey (NDSHS) is now complete. Survey responses were collected from April–September 2019. Over 22,000 people aged 14 and over participated in the 2019 NDSHS. Multiple methods were available to complete the 2019 survey; including a paper questionnaire, online and over the phone. A copy of the 2019 paper questionnaire is available for download—2019 NDSHS questionnaire. The AIHW would like to thank the people across Australia who volunteered their time to complete the 2019 survey.
Results for the 2019 NDSHS are expected to be released in the third quarter of 2020.
The latest findings available are from the 2016 NDSHS—National Drug Strategy Household Survey 2016: detailed findings
The survey collects information from teenagers and adults across Australia. It asks what they think about tobacco, alcohol and other drugs; and about their use of these drugs.
The survey is part of the Australian Government’s National Drug Strategy, which aims to improve Australians’ health and wellbeing. Researchers and policymakers use the results to better understand the issues surrounding tobacco, alcohol and other drugs.
The survey started in 1985 and is held every 3 years. The 2019 survey is the 13th in the series.
The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) runs the survey for the Australian Government Department of Health.
The AIHW contracted Roy Morgan Research Ltd to collect the information.
All responses collected in the survey are confidential, and strictly protected by law. Section 29 of the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare Act 1987 prohibits the release of any information about individuals collected in the survey.
The research complies with the Privacy Act 1988, and the information is only used for research purposes.
The AIHW Ethics Committee reviewed and approved the survey project.
