In the 2018 Australia Day Honours announcements, Dr Haikerwal received a Companion of the Order of Australia, the highest civilian honour. The AIHW would like to sincerely extend their congratulations to Dr Haikerwal on his achievement. Dr Haikerwal was the AIHW Board Chair from 19 July 2014 to 18 October 2016.
Dr Haikerwal has stated that 'he is dedicating his award to doctors who have died in the line of duty'.
