The AIHW is committed to providing high quality national health and welfare data and analysis.  Accurate statistical information, comprehensive data development, high-quality analyses and related services support an increased understanding of health and welfare issues. This evidence base is critical to good policymaking and effective service delivery, both of which have a direct impact on the lives of Australians.

We aspire to disseminate our information as widely as possible in free and accessible formats that are available to all Australians. In the interests of independence and transparency, nearly all of our work is released to the public, in accordance with strict privacy guidelines. We have an exemplary record in protecting the security of the data we hold.

We have embarked on an ambitious work plan to strengthen our role as a national leader in data collection and analysis. Our vision for the future is ‘stronger evidence, better decisions, improved health and welfare’. In pursuing this vision, we draw on our independence and our expertise in health and welfare to strive for excellence in all that we do.

Our strategic directions outline the goals we have set for the years ahead. We will strive to be:

  • leaders in health and welfare data
  • drivers of data improvements
  • expert sources of value-added analysis
  • champions for open and accessible data and information
  •  trusted strategic partners.

Our corporate plan provides more information about the activities we undertake to achieve these goals. The plan helps the Australian Parliament, the Australian Government and Australians to assess how we are performing, how we use the public resources entrusted to us, and how we cooperate with others to achieve wider objectives, in accordance with legislative requirements.

Our activities and performance are reviewed every financial year. These annual reports enable Australians to assess how efficiently, effectively and economically we are able to provide our information and services to stakeholders and all Australians.
